Euro Diary: Dutch Discontent, Supercomputer Predicts Champion, Referees and Commentators for the Final
July 12, 2024
Dutch Discontent

The day has been dominated by heated debates over the refereeing in the semifinal between the Netherlands and England. The Dutch camp is outraged by the decisions made by German referee Felix Zwayer.

“It wasn’t a penalty. The only intention was to block the shot. Then Harry Kane kicks, and their legs collide. Football is being ruined by such VAR decisions,” said the Netherlands' head coach Ronald Koeman to ESPN.

“I don’t know what to say or if I should say anything. The referee left the field quickly, and that speaks volumes. The rules keep changing, and these small adjustments can have major consequences,” captain Virgil van Dijk told Daily Express.

Dutch football legend Pierre van Hooijdonk echoed these sentiments, criticizing Zwayer’s decisions, especially regarding a duel with Cody Gakpo in the second half, calling for the referee to be blacklisted.

Dutch Frustration or Insult?

Former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart took it a step further, openly insulting the England national team after their victory.

“These English players pissed me off. They are such a crappy team. They didn’t want to do anything more. We didn’t do much either, but luckily, we created a scoring chance. Maybe I’m a bit emotional, but it could have been much more,” Van der Vaart told NOS.
